The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It’s a great opportunity for our community to focus attention on early childhood learning and the programs and services that help children succeed in school and in life.
It’s never too early to plan! The NAEYC web site has a wealth of great ideas to inspire you to create fun, themed learning activities throughout the week:
Healthy eating and fitness at home and school
This fun, food-themed day is about more than just cheese and crackers. Cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science, and more. With the rise in childhood obesity, you can encourage healthy nutrition and fitness habits at home and in the classroom.
The Opportunity for Influence (OFI) breakfast is an event where Smart Start of Mecklenburg County (SSMC) Board members invite community leaders, colleagues, politicians and friends to learn about the challenges young children (birth to age 5) and their families face in our community. SSMC is dedicated to serving the children and their families of Mecklenburg County by funding 28 programs that promote health, family support and early childhood education.
Think, problem solve, create
Children develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands. On Artsy Thursday celebrate the joy and learning children experience when engaged in creative art making. Use any materials—from crayons to paint, clay to crafts!
Sharing family stories
Engaging and celebrating families is at the heart of supporting our youngest learners. NAEYC applauds family members’ role as young children’s first and most important teachers.
This Year’s WOYC Song
This year’s song is “One Love,” performed here by Aaron Nigel Smith and the One World Chorus.
