What Is Autism?
Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurobiological disorder that starts in early childhood. Typically it refers to a range of conditions that impact communication, socialization, and behavior. As a “spectrum,” individuals have varying degrees of difficulty in these areas, requiring different levels of support. Current estimates by the Centers for Disease Control indicate that 1:54 children in the US are affected by autism.
How Do I Know if My Child is Developing Appropriately or if There is a Delay?
Every child is different! While one child may walk at 10 months, another walks at 15 months, and both of those answers are ok. Children develop at their own pace, but for most typically developing children, certain milestones fall into an average age range. Please refer to page 6 in the Guidebook for an overview of typical development versus how a child with autism develops.
